VISAs & Entry Requirements
Tokyo: Cool and gradually warming, highs around 54–57°F, evenings around 41–45°F, mostly sunny with occasional light rain.
Kanazawa: Chilly and partly cloudy, highs 46–50°F, nights 34–37°F, chance of light showers or snow flurries.
Kyoto: Mild and dry, highs 52–55°F, evenings 39–43°F, generally sunny with crisp mornings.
Seoul: Cold but sunny, highs 46–50°F, evenings 32–36°F, occasional breezy days with clear skies.
Pack with layering in mind: light, warm layers you can mix and match, plus a packable down jacket. Temperatures vary by city, so a warm layer for chilly mornings in Kanazawa and Seoul is essential, while Tokyo and Kyoto will feel milder by midday. Include a compact umbrella or rain jacket and comfortable, broken-in walking shoes—the streets and temples are best explored on foot. Bonus: bring a small scarf or shawl; it’s lightweight but keeps you cozy on breezy days and doubles as a modesty cover for temple visits.
Weather
Japan: Tipping is not customary and can even be considered rude in many situations.
Restaurants: Service charge is usually included. No extra tip is expected.
Hotels: Not expected; if you really want to tip a bellhop or housekeeper, give cash in an envelope quietly.
Taxis: Do not tip. Round up to the nearest 100 yen if you like, but it’s optional.
Tours / Guides: Not expected. If you receive exceptional service, a small gift or handwritten thank-you is appreciated rather than cash.
South Korea: Tipping is not customary for most services.
Restaurants: Service is usually included in the bill. For high-end or international hotels, a 5–10% tip may be accepted but not required.
Hotels: Bellhops and housekeeping typically don’t expect tips, but rounding up or leaving a few thousand won is a nice gesture.
Taxis: Not expected. Round up the fare if you want, but it’s optional.
Tours / Guides: Small tips (equivalent of $5–10 per day) are appreciated for private guides if the service was excellent.
