The First Eunoia Reading retreat.
As women, the chapters of our lives are shaped by our responsibilities, our fears and our joys. We put everyone else first and ourselves last. It is honorable yet it leaves us wanting. Sometimes what we want is simple: a good book and the time to read it.
Lately I have felt the urge to step out of my own life for a few days and do nothing but read. A parenthesis suspended in time, with nothing to accomplish and no one waiting on me. And I thought, I can't be the only one.
So we are opening a new series within Eunoia Chapters: reading retreats. Twelve women, one beautiful setting, long days with our books and every meal taken care of. Each evening, over a candlelit dinner, we share the passage that stayed with us that day.
This first reading retreat takes place in Scotland this winter, in a castle just outside Edinburgh: walks through the Scottish countryside between chapters, and evenings spent laughing and crying over the lines we love most. Places are limited to twelve women. I’d love to see you there.
A Reading Retreat in Scotland
January 28 to 31, 2027
There is no schedule here but a 13th century castle on the banks of the River Esk, a library with a fire burning, and four days that belong entirely to us and our books.
Thursday: Arrival | We meet in the early afternoon, twenty minutes from Edinburgh, in a Scottish castle. Settle into your rooms, unpack your books and find the chair you will return to all weekend. In the evening we meet in the Library, reached through a bookcase that swings open, for an opening circle by the fire before descending the stone stairs to dinner in the vaulted Dungeon. We go around the table and share what we brought to read and why.
Friday: Reading | Read in the Library, in your room, in a window seat with a blanket. When you need air, the woodland paths along the Esk are right outside the door, and anyone who wants to walk together can. Lunch arrives without anyone having to think about it. As the light fades we come back together, and over a candlelit dinner each woman reads aloud the passage that stayed with her that day.
Saturday: More Reading | A winter walk through the castle's parkland and wooded valleys for those who want it. And then, straight back to the book you could not put down. The final dinner is the long one: more passages, more tea, and the conversations that only happen once strangers have spent four days reading side by side.
Sunday: Departure | One last breakfast before we hug goodbye.

Weather
In late January, daily temperatures in Edinburgh typically range from an average high of 41°F to 45°F (5°C to 7°C) down to an overnight low of 34°F (1°C), with frequent frost and occasional snow.
Logistics
Take the train or fly into Edinburgh on January 28th, arriving by 2pm at the latest. Depart from Edinburgh on January 31st, preferably after 10am. A post-retreat itinerary is available for those who wish to continue exploring Scotland via roadtrip.

On Eunoia retreats, we abstain from alcohol, dress with intention, and present ourselves with internal grace, complementing our surroundings. Without the crutch of a drink, we embrace the deeper work of opening up, fostering connection, and discovering more meaningful ways to relax and unwind. What does "dress elegantly" mean? It means wearing whatever makes you feel beautiful, confident, and deeply connected to yourself.

This trip is designed for women who don’t mind the cold, want time to read and experience 4 days of womanhood with a no-itinerary retreat. If you’re more active and want a jam-packed retreat with experiences and activities, this is not the retreat for you.
