Iceland is highly card friendly, and most places, including small cafés, petrol stations, and toll roads, accept card payment, so you won't need much cash. It's still worth carrying a small amount for emergencies or more rural stops where card machines can occasionally be unreliable.

MONEY
Iceland in July is mild, typically 10 to 15°C (50 to 59°F), with cool evenings and changeable conditions throughout the day. It's also the height of the midnight sun, with nearly 24 hours of daylight.
Tipping isn't customary in Iceland, as service charges are already included in prices at restaurants, hotels and tours. That said, for a private guide or driver who has gone above and beyond, a discretionary tip of 1,500 to 3,000 ISK per day (approx. $10–20) is a kind gesture, though never expected. The same applies to hotel staff or porters, a small tip is appreciated but entirely optional. Since Iceland is largely a tip free culture, you shouldn't feel obligated to budget for it the way you might elsewhere.

Check out of ION Adventure Hotel this morning and begin your journey along Iceland's iconic Golden Circle.
Road Trip Recommendation: Golden Circle
Your first stop is Kerið, a striking volcanic crater lake with vivid red and black slopes surrounding deep blue-green water. Continue to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, and where Iceland's original parliament was founded over a thousand years ago. Given your love of adventure, this could also be the perfect spot for the Silfra snorkeling tour, drifting between two continents in some of the clearest water on earth.
From there, continue to Geysir, the geothermal area that gave geysers their name, where Strokkur erupts every few minutes sending water high into the air. Your final stop before Hotel Ranga is Gullfoss, one of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls, where the Hvítá River tumbles dramatically into a rugged canyon below.

The Golden Circle is Iceland's most famous sightseeing route, a loop of about 300km from Reykjavik that covers three of the country's most iconic natural sites, Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall. It packs an incredible variety of Iceland's landscape, geology, and history into a single day, tectonic plates, geysers, waterfalls, and rift valleys, all within easy reach of each other. It's often the first taste of Iceland's dramatic scenery for visitors before heading further out into the country.

11:00am: A private horseback riding excursion at Skalakot puts you on the back of the Icelandic horse, one of the purest and oldest breeds in the world, across lava fields and open farmland with the south coast mountains as a backdrop. The Icelandic horse's signature gait, the tölt, is uniquely smooth and covers ground at a pace that feels effortless even for riders without much experience. Skalakot's own stables sit on the property, so there is no transfer involved. Rides can be tailored to the group's ability level, from a gentle introductory loop to a longer cross-country route that takes you deep into the surrounding countryside.

Road Trip Recommendation: South Coast Waterfalls & Black Sand Beaches
Discover the dramatic beauty of Iceland's south coast, where some of the country's most iconic landscapes await. Since you already visited Seljalandsfoss on the way to Skalakot Hotel, begin at the mighty Skógafoss, where a staircase leads to a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the waterfall and the surrounding countryside - a worthwhile climb if you are keen to stretch you legs. Continue along the coast to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, renowned for its volcanic black sands, towering basalt columns and powerful Atlantic waves. This unforgettable drive showcases some of Iceland's most striking scenery and makes for a fantastic day of independent exploration.

Drive to the Glacier Lagoon area
8:00am: Make your way along the South Coast towards the Glacier Lagoon.
Road Trip Recommendation: Vik Town
On your way to Glacier Lagoon, consider a stop in Vik, Iceland's southernmost village, set dramatically against the black sands of Reynisfjara and the jagged sea stacks just offshore. It's a lovely spot to stretch your legs and grab lunch. For a really good burger, Smiðjan Brugghús is a great choice, or for something more low key, SKOOL BEANS, a converted school bus turned café, makes for a fun coffee stop. As you have your private glacier hike this afternoon, we'd recommend keeping the stop relatively brief so you have plenty of time to continue on to Glacier Lagoon.

2:30pm: A private glacier hike from Hótel Jökulsárlón takes you onto Breiðamerkurjökull, one of the most accessible outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap, with an expert guide who reads the ice in real time and takes you through crevasses, moulins, and ice formations that no fixed group tour gets near. The proximity of the hotel means you are on the glacier within minutes of leaving the property, which matters when you want to be there at the best light. Crampons, harnesses, and technical gear are provided, and the route is built around your group's fitness level, from a two hour surface walk to a full day technical descent into the glacier interior. The tour takes approximately four hours.

Road Trip Recommendation: Glaciers, Canyons & Iceland’s Southern Landscapes
Begin your journey from the breathtaking surroundings of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where enormous icebergs drift peacefully across the water after calving from the nearby glacier. Take time to visit Diamond Beach, just a short walk away, where pieces of glacial ice wash ashore against the striking black volcanic sand, one of Iceland’s most memorable coastal scenes.
As you make your way west, stop at Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon, a quieter and more intimate alternative to Jökulsárlón, offering beautiful views of the glacier face with fewer visitors. Continue through the dramatic landscapes of Skaftafell and Vatnajökull National Park, where scenic trails lead through rugged wilderness, including the beautiful Svartifoss waterfall, framed by distinctive basalt columns.
Further along the route, pause at the Fjallsjökull viewpoint and Lómagnúpur Scenic Spot, where towering mountains, glaciers, and vast open landscapes showcase the raw beauty of Iceland’s south coast. Finish your day at Fjaðrárgljúfur, a spectacular moss-covered canyon carved by glacial waters, where a short walking trail offers incredible views over its winding ravines.
End in Reykjavík, the country’s vibrant capital, where colourful streets, innovative cuisine, and a thriving arts scene meet Icelandic traditions. Spend time exploring the charming harbour, discovering local boutiques and galleries or simply enjoying the city’s relaxed atmosphere after your journey through the dramatic landscapes of the south.

Explore the Snæfellsnes Peninsula today, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours drive from Reykjavík. Often referred to as “Iceland in Miniature,” this remarkable region showcases an incredible variety of landscapes within a single day, from dramatic coastlines and volcanic lava fields to glaciers, mountains, and charming fishing villages.
Begin along the southern coast, where rugged volcanic landscapes meet the Atlantic Ocean. Stop in the picturesque village of Arnarstapi, where a scenic coastal path leads towards Hellnar, offering spectacular views of towering sea cliffs, dramatic rock formations, and seabirds nesting above the crashing waves. Continue onwards through Snæfellsjökull National Park, home to the glacier-capped volcano that inspired Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The area offers several scenic viewpoints, short hiking trails, and fascinating lava landscapes to explore.
As you circle the peninsula, discover the wild beauty of the northern coastline. Visit Djúpalónssandur, a striking black pebble beach surrounded by ancient lava formations, before continuing to Kirkjufell, the iconic arrow-shaped mountain near Grundarfjörður and one of Iceland’s most photographed landmarks. The surrounding waterfalls and dramatic scenery make this a particularly beautiful stop in the late afternoon light.
The drive back to Reykjavík follows the quieter northern shores of the peninsula before rejoining the main route, making for a wonderfully varied day of independent exploration through one of Iceland’s most captivating regions.

6:00pm: Meet your local guide, Ágústa, in the hotel lobby for a 3 hour private food tour of Reykjavik. This tour moves through the city's compact but serious culinary scene, taking you to major landmarks and some of Reykjavik's finest restaurants. Please show up with an empty stomach and expect to be completely full afterwards. Your guide will serve you and feel like a friend whilst narrating Iceland’s history and diving into various topics of Icelandic culture. Your tour will end at your hotel at around 9:00pm.

Road Trip Recommendation: Reykjanes Peninsula
Make your way from The Edition Reykjavik towards Keflavik Airport today, approximately 45 minutes drive across the Reykjanes Peninsula. Often overlooked compared to Iceland's more famous routes, this stretch offers a striking introduction to the country's volcanic character, with sweeping lava fields, moss covered rock, and a raw, otherworldly landscape found nowhere else on the island.
Begin at Kleifarvatn, one of the peninsula's largest lakes, sitting quietly among the lava fields, a peaceful first stop as you leave the city behind. Continue to Gunnuhver, Iceland's largest mud pool, where steam rises dramatically from the earth and boardwalks let you get close to the bubbling geothermal activity safely. From there, head to Reykjanesviti lighthouse, Iceland's oldest, perched above black cliffs with sweeping Atlantic views. Just offshore, keep an eye out for Karl, a dramatic sea stack rising from the water, one of the peninsula's most striking natural landmarks. Continue on to the Bridge Between Continents, a small footbridge symbolically connecting the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Your final stop is SIXT at Keflavik Airport, where you will drop your rental car and meet your driver for transfer to The Retreat.

Deplar Farm sits in the Fljót valley in northern Iceland, on a former sheep farm at the foot of mountains that drop almost directly into a glacial river below. The remoteness is the point. Eleven suites look out over a landscape bathed in the extraordinary light of the midnight sun, where summer days stretch on seemingly without end and the valley feels entirely yours. An infinity pool and hot tubs sit outside year round, and a subterranean spa sits within. In summer the surrounding wilderness opens up entirely, with hiking, river rafting, horse riding, and sea angling all available directly from the farm.

You can choose your preferred location (Sea or River) on the day, depending on weather. You’ll arrive back at Deplar Farm at 5:00pm, with time to relax before dinner.

Mountain Biking Adventure
10:00am: With Deplar’s fleet of e-bikes and fat bikes, you’ll spend the morning exploring Iceland’s extensive mountain bike trails, pedaling through glaciated valleys on gravel roads and rolling singletracks.

Whitewater Rafting
1:00pm: Depart for your Whitewater Rafting experience on the West Glacial River. The tour starts at 3:00pm and lasts approximately 3.5 hours. Paddle through the rapids of Iceland’s most sought-after whitewater destination with incredibly scenic views. You’ll depart for Deplar at around 6:30pm.
