Kigali Travel Guide: Where to Eat, Stay, Shop and Explore

Kigali Travel Guide

Kigali is Rwanda's capital and the starting point for most gorilla trekking itineraries, and it deserves two full days of its own. The city now has a serious food, coffee and design scene alongside two museums that explain the country's history. This guide covers the twelve places worth building a Kigali stay around and we’re ready to get started on your trip when you are.

The Best Restaurants in Kigali

Kozo

Kōzo serves Afro-Asian fusion cooking from Thai-Dutch executive chef Sakorn Somboon in the hills of the Kimihurura neighborhood. The dining room opens onto an outdoor terrace with city views, and the bar works well for a drink before dinner. Book ahead on weekends, when tables fill quickly. Address: 17 KN 14 Ave.

Heaven Restaurant

Heaven Restaurant in Kiyovu is one of the longest-running names on Kigali's dining scene and sits on the same street as Hemingways Retreat Kigali. The kitchen turns Rwandan produce into modern dishes such as Nile perch, cassava chimichurri and mango panna cotta. Ask for a table on the terrace, which looks out over the city.

Repub Lounge

Repub Lounge is the place to try Rwandan grill classics, including brochettes of grilled meat or fish served with sweet plantains. Lonely Planet ranks it among the city's most atmospheric restaurants and bars, and the cocktail list is solid. Reserve for dinner, when the room is at its liveliest.

Where to Stay in Kigali

Hemingways Retreat Kigali

Hemingways Retreat Kigali, formerly The Retreat by Heaven, is a solar-powered boutique hotel in the Kiyovu neighborhood, about 20 minutes by car from Kigali International Airport. It joined the Hemingways Collection in mid-2025, and Town & Country and The New York Times both named it one of the best new hotels in the world in 2018. Italian architects designed the property with Rwandan craftsmen, and the teak furniture throughout is made locally.

The hotel has 20 rooms and suites plus Luxury Pool Villas with solar-heated saltwater plunge pools. Deluxe King Rooms measure 35 square meters, and Superior King Suites add a second patio and an outdoor rain shower. Facilities include Fusion, a fine dining restaurant with a farm-to-table menu, along with a spa with three treatment rooms, a saltwater pool, a gym and a boutique selling Rwandan art and fashion. Heaven Restaurant is next door, reached by a garden stairway.

The Best Cafes in Kigali

Question Coffee Gishushu

Question Coffee opened in 2013 with backing from Bloomberg Philanthropies and invests in training Rwanda's smallholder coffee farmers. The Gishushu branch at 8 KG 8 Ave is the flagship, with indoor tables and a leafy garden. Book one of its tasting classes or the crop-to-cup experience, and buy a bag of beans to take home.

Rubia Coffee Roasters

Rubia Coffee Roasters in Kimihurura ranked 54th in The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops 2026, the first café in Rwanda to make the list. Founder Mathias Kalisa started roasting in 2018 and works with small batches of beans from women-run cooperatives across the country. The courtyard café at KG 2 Ave also serves a full food menu, so it works for breakfast or lunch.

Kivu Noir - favorite!

Kivu Noir serves single-estate Red Bourbon Arabica grown above 4,800 feet on the hills around Nkora, on the shores of Lake Kivu. Its parent company, Caferwa, was founded in 1995 to support genocide survivors and runs five coffee farms across Rwanda. The flagship café at 2 KG 668 St in Kimihurura has a cupping lab, so book a tasting or roasting workshop with the baristas, and the second branch is inside Norrsken House in the city center.

Shopping in Kigali

House of Tayo

House of Tayo designs menswear and accessories that combine African heritage with contemporary tailoring. The label is best known for its bow ties and statement jackets, and its boutique sits in one of Kigali's upscale residential neighborhoods. It is the right stop for a gift that travels well.

Sonia Mugabo

Sonia Mugabo is one of Rwanda's leading womenswear designers, with a minimalist line built on clean cuts and a modern African point of view. Her store at House 14, KG 601 St carries dresses, separates and accessories. Allow time for fittings if you plan to buy more than one piece.

Rwanda Clothing

Rwanda Clothing was founded in Kigali in February 2012 by designer Joselyne Umutoniwase. Indagare names it one of the two essential shopping stops in the city, alongside the Abraham Konga Collection, where jewelry is made from recycled brass, cow horn and wood. Both are regular stops on Kigali's private fashion tours.

The Best Museums in Kigali

Kigali Genocide Memorial

Kigali Genocide Memorial on KG 14 Ave is the resting place of around 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. It opened in April 2004, on the tenth commemoration, and its exhibitions trace how the genocide took shape and place it alongside other genocides of the twentieth century. The visit continues through memorial gardens and mass graves, so allow at least two hours and schedule it early in your stay.

Kandt House Museum

Kandt House Museum on KN 90 St occupies the former residence of Richard Kandt, the first German colonial Resident of Rwanda, and it is the only building from 1908 still standing in Kigali. It served as the Natural History Museum until December 2017, when it reopened under its current name with exhibitions on Rwanda before and during German colonial rule. The hilltop garden looks over old Kigali toward Mount Kigali, Mount Jali and Mount Shyorongi.

Plan Your Kigali Trip

Kigali pairs naturally with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, and two nights in the city at the start or end of the trip gives you time for every place on this list. Food lovers heading north can add Meza Malonga, chef Dieuveil Malonga's tasting menu restaurant, which has moved from Kigali to an island on Lake Ruhondo.
